Rick Astley is reported to be dead. Rick Astley is also reported not to be dead.

So who should we believe over the death or not of the 80s pop icon and latterly hero of Rickrolling?

My Examiner colleague Kelvin Lynch has the meat of the story here.

There's a purported Associated Press release doing the rounds on the internet stating that Rick Astley is dead. The release is very well done, it's in the house style, it looks real. However, it didn't actually appear on the Associated Press wire itself. It's only circulating second hand.

Now there is one difficulty, for usually it's only actually news organizations themselves that will know what has appeared on the AP wire, it's not something which is generally available to the public. So how do you know whether the story of Rick Astley's death has indeed gone out over the wire or is in fact a fake?

We at The Examiner can help here. Go to our search page and you can enter a search for "Rick Astley" and you can, by using the appropriate tab at the top, search only the AP newswire. As of this moment, as I write, there are no entries in the past 7 days for Rick Astley: nothing about his death or anything else.

Thus we can say with a very high level of confidence that the purported AP release is not an official one: and that leads us to the conclusion that the "Rick Astley dead" story is just that, a story and not a true one.
