AP Photo of part of Mayara Tavares

Mayara Tavares is the young Brazilian lady that Presidents Obama and Sarkozy are admiring part of. Or, of course, not admiring part of, depending upon how you take the video of the whole scene rather than just this still photograph.

Our view is here at Obama looking at the girl (given that title you might not need to read all that much of the report to get a flavor of what our view is, it has to be said).

As to further information about Mayara Tavares, it's not that uncommon a name so quite which Facebook entry belongs to this Mayara is unknown. In the spirit of the detailed research for which the Examiner is so well known we present simply this particular Mayara Tavares: at least the pose is similar so perhaps detailed study will tell us whether this is the right person.

As to what a 17 year old Brazilian girl (are we supposed to say young woman now? She is, after all, past the age of consent in her native country, which is 14 in Brazil) is doing hobnobbing with the leaders of the world, that's easy to explain. UNICEF (part of the United Nations alphabet soup) has a gimmick where at the G8 meetings they have some near random group of photogenic youngsters called the J8 show up. It's to prove that everyone is of course listening to da youf. No, really, young people's views on matters they have no comprehension of are extremely important, they're not just there as eye candy. Not at all.

This is why they appear in photos of such summits and never in the documents of whatever it has been decided should be done.

As to what Mayara Tavares has done to gain this trip to Italy, here's what her biography, courtesy of UNICEF, says:

Mayara Tavares, is 16 and lives in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She inherited from her grandmother and father a passion to take part in community action and social movements and has been an activist in her community fighting for children and adolescent rights. She has recently acted as a community researcher interviewing other adolescents in the community about their lives and how it feels for them to be growing up in the shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro. Through this work she became part of a National Platform for the improvement of poor communities situated in large urban centers, an initiative carried out by UNICEF in Brazil. She also became a member of the Youth Forum in her municipality and hopes that she can continue to engage her peers in this work.

One final thing, the feminist site Jezebel, comments upon the tushie copping and Mayara Tavares story thusly:

...a popular argument went that Hitler never cheated on his wife, but was still an evil and immoral leader.

Rather makes you weep for the state of American feminism really. Yes, Hitler was an evil and immoral leader: but he didn't have a wife he could cheat on. He married his mistress, Eva Braun, a couple of hours before they both committed suicide. It would have to be a pretty determined adulterer who managed to fit in a bit of cheating on the side in that time span.
