Not everyone is a "beach person." I always thought I preferred the mountains for the adventure they offer, until I went to Hawaii. I realized that, until then, I just hadn't found the right beach for me. Whether you are craving a tranquil escape or seeking excitement, the right beach can give you a retreat. Some of these destinations are within driving distance from Atlanta, while others are offered with discounted airfare and hotels. Here's to finding exactly what you want!
For the pet-friendly pair: Cape San Blas, Florida - Want to pamper yourselves but can’t leave your pooch? Just down the road from Mexico Beach, your dog is welcome at this beach any time. However, there are rules and you must obtain written approval. It’s not free, but doesn’t your dog deserve a break, too?
For the nature-lovers: Cumberland Island, Georgia - If you are into nature and want seclusion, this is your beach. Located on an island that only allows 300 visitors at a time (who must have reservations), you can see wild horses grazing on sea oats right in the sand dunes.
For the athletic couple: Makena Beach, Maui - Golden sand, clear water, and lots of waves make the area fun to surf (or watch). Rentals for surf boards, kayaks, and snorkeling equipment can be found all over the island. A bonus is that you can take the fun inland and go hiking and biking. Expedia is offering a deal on air plus four nights in Maui starting at $868.
For the couple on a budget: Mexico Beach, Florida- best little-known beach on a budget. If you want a Bed & Breakfast type feel with an ocean view, stay at the Driftwood Inn. You can see all it has to offer here.

For the international affair: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This spot is hot now, with an assortment of beaches and vacation deals at 50 percent off. Between tequila tastings and zip line tours in the tropics, Puerto Vallarta is exotic enough to be exciting (but you can still get your Starbucks fix). I recommend renting a Jeep and asking locals to point you toward their favorite beaches.
