Tomorrow marks the 219th celebration of Bastille Day, a French national holiday marking the Fete de la Federation (Federation Holiday) on July 14, 1790. The Federation Holiday was held to recognize the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789. To the French, the fall of the prison symbolized the unification of the people under a new government. In honor of Bastille Day, you can experience the “joie de vivre” around town without flying to France.
If you’re lucky enough to have the day off, you can see French art in two special exhibitions at the High Museum. The Monet Water Lilies exhibition is open through August 23rd. It is a collection of Claude Monet’s paintings from Giverny, his home near Paris. The other exhibition is Louvre Atlanta: The Louvre and the Masterpiece, open through September 13th. Here you can see over 90 works of art on loan from the Louvre Museum in Paris.
After the museum visit, sample some French wines and cheeses. The cheesemongers at Alon’s Bakery can help you in the selection process. Finding a decent French wine will be easy at the Dekalb Farmers Market, where wines are arranged by country. Where to put down your picnic blanket is up to you.
In the evening, enjoy specially priced menus at restaurants like Atmosphere Bistro. The bistro is offering a three-course menu for $25. (In case you miss it, the special is available every Tuesday and Wednesday). French American Brasserie also has a special celebration menu, and reservations fill up fast.
