Lance Stephenson, arguably the best high school player in the country, visited the University of Cincinnati this past weekend. The four schools that seem to be in the running to sign Stephenson are Cincinnati, Memphis, Florida International (led by new coach Isiah Thomas) and Arizona. There is also the possibility that Stephenson, a 2009 McDonald’s All-American, may opt to play professionally overseas for one season then enter the 2010 NBA draft. The Bearcats may have an advantage though as Stephenson’s friend Sean Kilpatrick is already a member of the team.
Unfortunately the news of Stephenson’s visit to Clifton wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Not only is Stephenson due to appear in court today to profess his innocence against sexual assault charges, but he is also wrapped up in controversies regarding his online reality show “ Born Ready” and a possible relationship with Under Armour athletic wear.
The 6’6” guard from Brooklyn, New York nicknamed Sir Lancelot would make an outstanding addition to this year’s Bearcat squad. On the court it’s hard not to predict Stephenson as an immediate starter, but it’s off the court issues that may prevent him from playing college basketball for any school.
If Lance Stephenson does become the newest Bearcat, he will definitely be the most highly-touted recruit signed by UC in the modern era of the program. Even highly-recruited stars of the past like Danny Fortson, Kenny Satterfield, Roger McClendon, and Dontonio Wingfield didn’t come with the hype, status, and potential of Lance Stephenson.
Although a probable “one and done” prospect, Stephenson would elevate the ’09-’10 Bearcat team from highly-likely NCAA tournament contenders to a lock to make the big dance.
