Autumn colors in New Jersey are starting to peak this weekend. While there is still a lot of green (it seems to be hanging on longer this season), most of central and northern New Jersey is awash with brilliant golds and reds.

In a previous Examiner article, I covered Route 519 as one of the best cruising roads in the state and this time of year, that is especially true. One of the great pleasures we are lucky enough to experience when we are on our bikes is the scent of autumn. Fireplaces, smokehouses, the faint musty scent of decaying leaves all are worthy of slow deep breaths as we cruise along. Route 519 is primarily surrounded by farmland or small estates with the occasional historical village thrown in to break up the monotony.

Events have wound down, with only three listed this weekend: In Mantua, the Chrome Riders RC is sponsoring the Cooper Kids Toy Run on Saturday, the 24th. The police escorted ride begins at the VFW, 8 New York Avenue in Mantua. Registration begins at 10:00 am and the ride leaves at 12:00 pm. On Sunday, te 25th there are two more rides scheduled,: Out of Edgewater, the Thrive to Ride for Kids, sponsored by Thrive Fitness and Outback Steakhouse, begins at the Edgewater Commons Mall. Registration begins at 9:30 am. The ride starts at 11:00 am at Edgewater Commons Mall, 521 River Rd, Edgewater. The fee to pre-register is $20.00 and to register the day of the event is $25.00. There will be food, prizes, and raffles. This ride will benefit, Help–A-Child-Smile Foundation, Boomer Esiason Foundation, Four Foundation, and Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance. Last but not least, out of Lakewood, it’s the 3rd Annual John Blewett III Bike Run to Benefit St. Judes Children. Sponsored by John Blewett III Memorial Fund to Benefit St. Judes Research Hospital, the ride starts at Harley-Davidson on Route 70 in Lakewood, Registration is from 8:30 am to 10:00 am. The ride fee is $15.00 per person. Run to help St. Jude’s children fight cancer.

Whether participating in organized rides or just wanting to cruise alone, the next week or so will prove to have the prettiest scenery all over New Jersey. Be sure to bring a camera and give yourself plenty of time to stop and enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of the most colorful time of year.
