The Boston Cannons, along with the rest of Major League Lacrosse, released their 23-man protected rosters on Tuesday. The protected roster names players that are not eligible for “free-agency” style pickup by other teams. Players left off the roster are essentially “unrestricted free agents,” and are eligible to move to other teams.

There were little to no surprises on the Cannons protected roster. The Cannons held onto most of their key contributors from the 2009 season, including league scoring leaders Paul Rabil, Sean Morris, and Ryan Boyle. Cannons goalies, Michael Levin, Kip Turner and Jordan Burke were also all protected.

Cannon midfielder Kevin Cassese was left unprotected, which the MLL takes to mean that he is considering retirement. Cassese has been active in the league for seven seasons, playing with the now-defunct Rochester Rattlers, and Philadelphia Barrage, before teaming up with the Cannons this past season. Cassese has been a consistent contributor during his career, averaging a goal per game (64 career goals in 62 career games.) He has yet to officially announce his retirement.

Outside of Boston, two well-known MLL players were left unprotected by their respective MLL teams: Josh Sims of the Denver Outlaws and Gary Gait of the Toronto Nationals.

Players left unprotected are now a part of the MLL Player Pool. The pool is frozen until after December 9, the date of the MLL’s Supplemental Draft.
