I hope no one at Philadelphia's Wachovia Center for Friday evening's Philadelphia Wings matchup with the Boston Blazers was expecting a back-and-forth high scoring thriller of a lacrosse game. They were treated - although, I am not sure it didn't feel like a treat to Wings fans - to one of the lowest scoring NLL games of the year thus far.
The Blazers won the game 8-4, but the Wings were never even in the game that much. Jason Bloom and Dan Dawson led the Blazers to 4 goals in the game's first 6 minutes. The Wings only managed 1 goal in the first half of the game, and the Blazers went into halftime with a 6-1 lead, thanks to another Bloom goal and a goal by Daryl Veltman.
The third quarter was without any scoring action by either side. Blazer goaltender Anthony Cosmo led the Wings scoreless for 40 minutes, between their lone first quarter tally and their next goal 6 minutes into the fourth quarter. Cosmo made 33 stops on the evening, and had a great 89.2 save percentage in this defensively spirited game.
The Wings made a panicked attempt to get back into the game in the last few minutes of the fourth, but could never come close to tying the game.
Bloom finished the evening with 3 goals, and Dawson had 2 goals. This week's NLL Player and Rookie of the Week Gary Bining had an assist in the game.
The Blazers, now tied for second in the East Division with the New York Titans, are off until next Friday, where they begin a two game stint in the West - a game each with the Minnesota Swarm and Calgary Roughnecks.
