Boston Blazer forward Gary Bining is a shining example of persistence and hard work paying off in spades.
On Wednesday afternoon, Bining was named the National Lacrosse League's Player and Rookie of the Week after his four goal performance Saturday night during the Blazers game with the New York Titans. Bining scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter of the game, tying the game for Boston with :41 seconds left. All of his goals either took the lead for Boston or tied the game, and he was all over the field making himself known all night.
Bining was drafted in 2006 by the NLL's Colorado Mammoth, but did not make it onto a NLL roster until this season with the Blazers. Bining, a 2006 graduate of Ohio State and a native of Vancouver, spent the past two seasons playing professional lacrosse in Canada. At 5 foot 8, he is one of the smallest players in the NLL, but has been playing extremely well this season. Besides his game-winning plays against the Titians, Bining also had multiple point games against the Portland Lumberjax and Philadelphia Wings.
To add on to his lacrosse ability, Bining was a scholar-athlete at Ohio State, majoring in Pre-Med/Biology, and has plans to apply to medical school after the NLL season is over. However, if he keeps making contributions like he did on Saturday evening, med school may just have to wait.
The Blazers have now had two players named Rookie of the Week this season (Bining and Daryl Veltman), as well as having the Rookie of the Month (Veltman) and Assists Leader (Dan Dawson.) The Blazers are currently traveling to face the Philadelphia Wings for the third time this season on Friday evening.
