This upcoming weekend, July 11th and 12th, the sixth annual Twin Cities Zinefest will take place at the Stevens Square Center for the Arts. Now, I know that zines and comics are two totally different things, but there's enough overlap between the two worlds that I feel like announcing this event is still within my purview. (Note to self: look up "purview" before publishing article.)
On Saturday between 11 and 5, and Sunday between 11 and 4, check out the best zines and zine-makers (zineists? zineographers?) in the area and support their work by buying a few copies. There'll be live readings on Saturday starting at 1, and a documentary about Minneapolis zines at 3. There'll also be an afterparty at Arise! bookstore, Saturday at 6:00, with music from local bands Teenage Moods, Bla Bla Blacksheep, Gerald Prokop, and Zombie Season.
Currently there's also an exhibit at the Minneapolis Center for Book Arts, "Independent Variables: Contemporary Zine Publications", which sort-of ties into Zinefest. It also will tie into the Book Art Biennial on July 25th, a celebration of art as a tool for social change, which culminates in the awarding of the MCBA Prize for book art to one of five finalists from around the world.
