Kiss, the band that never ages and never changes, the P.T. Banham's of rock and roll, played on the Late Night with David Letterman show Tuesday night. Dave has been having some celebrated problems in recent days, and he had another at the end of the show, depending on your point of view about Kiss. The band played "Modern Day Delilah," a song off their new CD, Sonic Boom, their first new studio album in 10 years. The CD hit every Walmart in the country on Oct. 6th. The band played pretty well, it's a hard rockin' song, bombs went off behind the drums and all in all, it was four minutes of that combination of bombast and shameless pandering to the lowest common denominator that is the quintessential Kiss experience. The band, by the way, has finally solved the problem of how to replace Ace Frehley and Eric Criss. They just put new guys into the same old Spaceman and Kat makeup. At least on Letterman, they did. Eric Singer is the new drummer, and Tommy Thayer the new guitarist. Both played great.
At the end of the song, Dave went over to do his trademark handshake with the band, and when he wasn't looking, Gene Simmons extended his unnaturally long tongue and gave Dave an earful. Whether it was worse than being blackmailed for office affairs, only Dave can say.
