With over 700 billion in proposed stimulus funds up for grabs, the mayors of cities around the nation are vying for money to fund pet projects. Hopefully the Obama administration can withstand the push for pork from mayors like Miami's Manny Diaz who requested $3.2 billion for projects such as the construction of a water slide, creation of new BMX and dirt bike trails at Virginia Key Park, and a new Miami Rowing Club Building and Virginia Key Beach Museum.
It appears some cities have thrown out common sense in their rush to get at this next round of government handouts; mistakenly believing that putting a "number of jobs created" figure next to pork will overshadow the fact that what they are proposing is in fact pork. Simply making the city pretty is not a reason to get taxpayer dollars. We have already wasted millions, perhaps billions, with the first $700 billion free-for-all "let's give out money in hopes of corporations who previously showed they can not spend it wisely will now spend it wisely" bail out bill. This resulted in billions of unaccounted dollars and banks refusing to disclose where the funds went. Obviously, the funds did not go to loans for those businesses and individuals who needed it. And obviously, that first $700 billion did not turn around the economy.
So we wait and hope that the new administration comes through with its promise that this new stimulus package will indeed be a stimulus to the economy, and that the funds will not be used for ear marks.
