Well folks, today is Black Friday, the unofficial holiday that ardent shoppers anticipate with baited credit card – and non-shoppers avoid like yesterday’s leftover yams.

Black Friday, otherwise known as The Day After Thanksgiving, marks the start of the holiday shopping season. Most retailers have huge sales, major discounts, and attractive incentives to get patrons in the door. Many businesses open at ridiculously early hours, some as yawn-inducing as 3 a.m., and it isn’t unusual to find shoppers lined up out front in their pajamas, clutching a cup of hot cocoa and praying to the Bargain Gods that Spanx will be buy one, get one free.

But here’s an unusual Black Friday tip that all Boston shoppers should take advantage of. It’s a gift you must use today (or on the day of purchase, if not purchasing today), and it’s a gift that you yourself can easily benefit from as well. Go to BosTix, and get tickets for a local theatrical production.

BosTix offers greatly discounted prices on tickets to live theater in the Boston area. While tickets are available online for advance purchase, in my experience you will find better selection (and better deals) on tickets for productions playing that same day by going to one of the two BosTix ticketing booth locations, either in Copley Square or Faneuil Hall. Though not all shows playing in the area will appear on their menu, the majority of them will.

So treat a loved one, or yourself, to the gift of theater for the holidays. The lines outside the BosTix booths are considerably less painful than waiting in line outside a retail store at 3 a.m.

For more info: Visit the BosTix website for all you need to know, including upcoming shows, ticketing booth hours, and locations.
