Sometimes I get so caught up in the corruption that corporations are, somehow, legally getting away with, I forget that the scams that most of us consider to be hilariously obvious are actually hurting some poor su… ah… [ahem] people out there.
Have you heard this one?
FTC Sues to Halt Car-Warranty Phone Spam
The calls warn that a car warranty is about to expire. If consumers answer the call, a "warranty specialist" would mislead them into believing their company was affiliated with an auto dealer or manufacturer and try to sell a service contract…”
I received that phone call. More than once. I just thought, “What? Get out of here!”, but I suppose some foo… [ahem] poor, unsuspecting person could be tricked.
Well, at least these scammers are getting what’s coming to them.
What’s frightening to me, is that they feel comfortable enough in the business environment to launch such a scam.
Let me put that another way:
You have to be pretty lax in prosecuting that sort of crime for someone to think they could get away with such a thing. If we were tougher, and more consistent at being tough, the crooks would be more afraid.
