Hero Pilot had just received a pay cut.

Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the man who safely landed flight 1549 in the Hudson River, spoke before a congressional hearing today, revealing that he’d recently had his salary cut by 40% and had his pension taken away.

Pay and benefit cuts are forcing experienced pilots from their cockpits, Sullenberger told the House aviation subcommittee in a hearing underway today."

“Sully” believes that good pilots are the key to safety and that, given the current state of the economy, they may be in short supply.

I am worried that the airline piloting profession will not be able to continue to attract the best and the brightest."

When airlines get in financial trouble they often cut employee salaries first.

When fuel prices soared last year, a fuel surcharge was added to ticket prices. Fuel prices have come down but airlines have not removed the surcharge.
