
Finding out you're pregnant can be one of the most joyful experiences in a new parents life. It also brings many, MANY questions throughout the next several months! It's important to make sure you're with a care provider (a Midwife of a Dr.) who has the same beliefs as you and your partner have. Go off referrals from friends, interview them, make sure they are the right person for the job. It's very disheartening to hear stories about woman who found out towards the end of their pregnancy that their Dr. has lots of rules they follow and won't budge on (for example: not allowing mom to go over her due date). The first trimester brings on many bodily change fairly quickly. A newly pregnant woman will notice breast tenderness. Morning sickness seems to kick between weeks 5 and 8 and can last a few weeks or for some the entire pregnancy. Other changes are frequent urination, excessive tiredness, constipation, changes in skin (acne!), increased cervical mucous and increased sense of smell are the most common. Some tips for morning sickness are, drink water, eat some ginger . They make ginger candy and ginger lollipops. You can probably find them at health food stores, baby stores, or online (www.amazon.com ) Lemon drops are also good, so are life savors. Vitamin B6 (50 mg) taken daily can also help. If none of this helps talk to you Doctor for other suggestions. In extreme cases, they can prescribe some medication. Many new parents start immediately thinking about decorating the nursery. While that can be very exciting and something that may seem like the first thing to do, it's important to make sure mom is taking care of herself FIRST. Good nutrition habits starting in early pregnancy can make things so much easier later on. Please check out my article "Eating for two?" for more information and tips. Try not to over due it in these early weeks. It's exciting knowing a baby is on the way but there's plenty of time to prepare for your new arrival.
