Finding out you're pregnant can be one of the most joyful experiences in a new parents life.  It also brings many, MANY questions throughout the next several months!  In this article you will find lots of information that may answers those questions as well as links to other websites that have even more detailed information.  Beginning in those early weeks many new parents (yes new moms AND new dads) are feeling scared.  Fear is normal. We're all human right?  Talk to friends or family members who've had babies before and they can help calm those nerves.  Many women don't even know they are pregnant until several weeks have passed.  (Check out this link for symptoms of pregnancy:   www.webmd.com/baby/guide/pregnancy-am-i-pregnant  ) Once it's been confirmed it is easy to become overcome with a range of emotion.   It's important to make sure you're with a care provider (a Midwife of a Dr.) who has the same beliefs as you and your partner have.  Go off referrals from friends, interview them, make sure they are the right person for the job.  It's very disheartening to hear stories about woman who found out towards the end of their pregnancy that their Dr. has lots of rules they follow and won't budge on (for example: not allowing mom to go over her due date).   Do your homework and you'll find the perfect person for you!  For some helpful questions to ask your potential care provider, click here: www.askdrsears.com/html/1/T010100.asp#T010106  For information on using a midwife go to OU Medical Center's website: www.oumedicalcenter.com/body.cfm

The first trimester brings on many bodily change fairly quickly. A newly pregnant woman will notice breast tenderness.  Morning sickness seems to kick between weeks 5 and 8 and can last a few weeks or for some the entire pregnancy.   Other changes are frequent urination, excessive tiredness, constipation, changes in skin (acne!), increased cervical mucous and increased sense of smell are the most common.   For more detailed information and to see WHY our bodies experience so many changes, click here: www.thehealthybelly.com/healthy_beginnings.php  Drinking lots of water will help with some of these.  Some tips for morning sickness are, drink water, eat some ginger . They make ginger candy and ginger lollipops.  You can probably find them at health food stores, baby stores, or online (www.amazon.com )  Lemon drops are also good, so are life savors.  Vitamin B6 (50 mg) taken daily can also help.  If none of this helps talk to you Doctor for other suggestions. In extreme cases, they can prescribe some medication. Baby Bliss also carries a line of wonderful all natural products including one for morning sickness. Check them out here: www.babysbliss.com/default.aspx

Many new parents start immediately thinking about decorating the nursery. While that can be very exciting and something that may seem like the first thing to do, it's important to make sure mom is taking care of herself FIRST.  Good nutrition habits starting in early pregnancy can make things so much easier later on.  Please check out my article "Eating for two?" for more information and tips.  Try not to over due it in these early weeks.  It's exciting knowing a baby is on the way but there's  plenty of time to prepare for your new arrival.  Take it easy and enjoy these last few months to rest up because onces baby comes things will get a little more hectic.
