Work is stressful. We need our weekends to go out, recuperate, and prepare for the next round. If your weekend is looking more laundry list than VIP guest list, cheer yourself up and de-stress with the Laughter Yoga Club of Nashville's weekly meet-up.
Laughter yoga, or hasya yoga, began in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria and his wife, Madhuri Kataria. In 14 years, laughing yoga has grown from a gathering of five people in a Mumbai park to a worldwide network of 6,000 laughter clubs, all focused on one thing, having a good laugh. Laughter yoga is often seen as a group meditation practice, as it disengages the conscious mind and allows a more emotional state to take over.
At a laughter yoga session you can expect to be very vocal. Sessions usually begin with clapping and chanting “ho ho ho, ha ha ha” followed by breathing exercises and some light stretching or power yoga poses. Sometimes there will be “gibberish” sessions or role-playing laughter. Laughing styles vary everywhere but often include greeting laughter, argument laughter, apology laughter and hearty laughter exercises. Group finishes with a mantra and prayer. Sessions usually last about half an hour.
The Laughter Yoga Club of Nashville meets Saturday mornings at 9am for a half hour of laughing and deep, yogic breathing. Classes, like laughter, are free and held at Back in Touch Wellness, located near Vanderbilt University at 2817 West End Ave, Suite 205.
