After several mixtape’s and guest appearances Washington D.C. MC Wale has released his debut album, Attention Deficit.
Attention Deficit starts off well with the song Triumph where Wale puts the old school on notice, “I ain’t trying to be politically correct/I won’t rest till I’m given my respect/My vision isn’t set on the money I get/But more or less the vets/I’m coming for y’all neck.”
The first few tracks of the album have you feeling optimistic, but the good stuff doesn’t last for long.
The Neptunes produced track Let It Loose sounds like a 1980’s video game. It’s without a doubt the worst Neptunes beat I’ve ever heard. The chorus is equally as bad as the beat, “Let it loose, let it loose, let it loose, she wants you to stroke her, stroke her, stroke her, and have fun.”
Almost as bad as Let It Loose is the albums first single Chillin’ featuring Lady Gaga—yes that Lady Gaga. Not only does the song ooze cheese by featuring Lady Gaga it sample’s the Steam song Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.
Things don’t suck forever.
On the song 90210 Wale tells the story of a woman in Beverly Hills who dreams of being a celebrity but suffers from low self esteem. “She throws up whatever she eats/She leaves the bathroom with a nose bleed/A regular girl with celebrity dreams/She is 90210…”
Shades is the standout song of Attention Deficit featuring Chrisette Michele. On Shades, Wale talks about his insecurities with having darker skin in the African-American community. “They say black is beautiful/But ask them beautiful light girls if its black they’re attracted to usually/What if Barack’s skin was all black truthfully/Would he be a candidate or just a black in the community?”
Attention Deficit features appearances from Bun B, K’naan, J Cole, Pharrell, Gucci Mane, Lady Gaga, Chrisette Michele, Jazmine Sullivan, and Marsha Ambrosius.
Wale is a good rapper with a lot to say. His voice is much needed at this time in history; I just wish his focus was a little better. On Attention Deficit the lyrical content sometimes makes up for the sub par beats--but just not enough.
Wale’s Attention Deficit gets 3 MPC’s.
