Rochester Atheists

Have you ever wondered if you're the only atheist in Rochester? Well, you're not! It's time to say hello to Rochester Atheists. They're new, but the drive to be successful is unprecedented. It's a new meet-up group that aims at helping bring atheist community in Rochester together to socialize and participate in the community services to better Rochester and Monroe County. Also, R.A. aims to give Rochester atheists a voice in local and national issues concerning atheism, separation of church and state, and anything else that impedes scientific and sociocultural progress.

Only one month old, R.A. was able to attract almost 30 members. The membership is slowly growing, with people joining every week. Atheists, now more than ever, want to be part of a community that accepts them for who they are, community that will not discriminate or alienate them. There is no reason that any atheist should be afraid to “shout from the rooftops” - “I'm an atheist.” The gratifying feeling of acceptance and knowing that you won't be looked down upon should be enjoyed by all atheists around the world. Yet there are many who are forced to stay in the “closet” because they are afraid to lose their family, friends, and even their job. It happened before, it happens now, and it will continue to happen.

It is our duty to stand up and say, “No more! I'm an atheist and I'm proud to be one.” Stand up and say it to your friends, family, and coworkers. It is time to rid ourselves from the closets that keep us from reaching our full potential as human beings. Gloria Steiman once wrote,

By the year 2000 we will, I hope, raise our children to believe in human potential, not God.

You are that child. Don't let anyone stand between you and your potential – it has the power to move mountains and part seas.

Rochester is just another city where atheist community will unite, take a deep breath and proclaim, “We are atheists,” with a big smile. It is time. The only thing that stops you - is you.

Be part of the movement, help write history and not just sit quietly on the sideline. Why be a spectator if you can be part of the greatest show on the Earth – life.
