Last night the NBA draft lottery was held and the probably of the Knicks landed exactly where it was supposed to, at pick number eight. There were no surprises for the bottom nine picks as all the teams went in the order that was expected.  As a gambler, odds are odds and it was out of the control.  But sometimes you need to hope for something bigger than life, but sitting at number eight isn't the worst thing for t

While the Knicks’ hopes were only 2.8%, the eighth pick is going to be an interesting choice for the team to make. With most of the elite players expected to be off the board, your Blake Griffin’s, Ricky Rubio’s, and Hasheem Thabeet’s, the Knicks will have to look to address the best available players.

However, what are the Knicks looking for exactly? Is Stephen Curry and his ability to open up the D’Antoni offense really what the Knicks are looking for? I would say at this point, drafting Curry is a safe bet as he has tremendous offensive upside in a basketball system that shines for scoring points.

Or do the Knicks need to address a big man and/or defense to a system that gave up just as many points as it scored on a nightly basis? Guys like Jordan Hill out of Arizona could possibly still be available, but when it comes down to it, all we can do right now is speculate.

We also can’t forget that in the next NBA draft the Knicks will have no first round pick because the Utah Jazz own the rights to it from a trade in years past. So the Knicks need to address their biggest concern for this year, and hope that the free agency plan for 2010 is in effect. That way, this could be the last lottery drawing the Knicks will be in for a while.

With the Los Angeles Clippers holding the first pick in the NBA draft, and having a lot of big men (though injury prone) on their table, this could be an opportunity for the Knicks or other teams to move up for Blake Griffin. The Clippers could probably benefit more from a guy like Rubio as Baron Davis begins to age and Rubio is only in his teens with many years to become elite in the league.  However with the number one pick, they control the destiny and the determination of the rest of the draft.

The next month should be interesting and as more scouts begin to scope out other prospects. There is always some kind of draft surprise in the lottery, so let’s hope it is not the Knicks who bring about this surprise.

We will look at possible scenarios in the coming weeks and news should begin soon as to what the Knicks will do. Maybe the Knicks will sign Nate Robinson and trade him to Sacramento and try to move itself into the Top 5. While not a bad idea, you have to expect that Donnie Walsh is going to be much more strategic than Isiah Thomas was in his tenure with the Knicks.

So Knick fans, who do the Knicks take at number 8? Are we satisfied with the outcome of Curry or do we need to look elsewhere?
