The clatter and rumors begin as the NBA draft lottery is less than a week away and the Knicks look to begin rebuilding their franchise. Not just for the 2010 free agency pool that has everyone in an uproar, but for the fans that haven’t seen what the Knicks are about since their days of dominance in the 1990s. When winning in the world’s greatest arena wasn't such a challenge but was expected. The New York limelight demands higher returns from its teams and in recent history, in all sports, that has not been the case.

Right now as it stands we know that the Knicks would receive the eighth overall pick in the draft in all stars and numbers fall into place. A draft that is deeper in point guards than years past, this is an opportunity for the Knicks to find a guy moving forward to help run the explosive D’Antoni offensive scheme. We take nothing away from a guy like Chris Duhon who completed his first season as a starter in his career. However, the reason for the success of Phoenix was because Steve Nash was just so explosive. His innate soccer knowledge translated into a “run-and-pass first” mentality that no other point guard in the league ever exhibited.

So how does one find the next Steve Nash?

Well, that may not be feasible, but finding someone that understands the offense they are coming into or knowing how to make their teammates better is a strong start.

The rumors of the Knicks taking Stephen Curry are intriguing. In my opinion Curry is somewhat of an anomaly to me. At 6-3 165 lbs he is taller than Duhon, but is much less built and looks too young to play professional sports. He amazes you with his quick release and ability to create off the shot. Then he makes the pass and seemingly can’t get his team to convert. Maybe on Davidson it was the Curry show and he didn’t really have the cast of college players to help make it happen. However, in the NBA and possibly on the Knicks, will the spread and speed offense really make him elite?

He led the nation this past year with 28.6 ppg and his numbers significantly increased in his junior season. His point average moved up about 3 points while his assists went from 2.9 to 5.6. The Knicks, if drafted, would depend on him for more passing in his rookie campaign but would want to see him mold into the all around threat. Your Steve Nash type, so to say.

Recently he was on ESPN Radio and spoke of denying any rumors he has heard coming to the Knicks. Saying he wants to hear it from Donnie Walsh himself. Our Newsday Fixer Alan Hahn reports about how Curry is reading, :07 seconds or less by Jack McCallum. You can read Alan’s article by clicking here.

The book that Mike D’Antoni and the Phoenix Suns offensive system is about. The Knicks do play in a very entertaining and fun system to watch. But what they do so strongly always has a negative, which is defense and they end up getting other teams involved in the high swinging offense.

So when asked who Curry could compare himself to in skill set, Curry replied Steve Nash. Is this the Knicks blessing in disguise, or will the Knicks look to find other answers on the defensive end if the opportunity arises?

In five days we will have a better understanding of where the Knicks lie and how to address any and all such problems then.
