Ed McMahon was one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege of knowing.
When my first television talk show hit the air in 1998, at a time when few celebrities were willing to appear, Ed McMahon, holding true to his vow to help aspiring talent, put his name and his reputation on my program.
It was the start of a memorable journey for myself and my budding career that may have never gotten off the ground without the eternal support and helpful guidance of Mr. McMahon, a contribution he would continue to make over the years as I had the distinct good fortune of keeping in contact with the legendary broadcaster.
Ed McMahon died early this morning in Westwood, California according his publicist Howard Bragman.
The cause of death was not given, but Mr. McMahon had been suffering from a variety of health problems over the last few months.
Despite having his stellar body of work clouded in recent years by health and financial problems, no one can deny the incredible legacy left behind by one of the most talented and generous men to ever work in the entertainment business.
The former Tonight Show sidekick was 86.
Although Mr. McMahon will be missed by all, especially by those who knew him best, as one reporter put it this morning: "heaven just got a little funnier."
