RIP: The final member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, drummer Mitch Mitchell, was found dead in a hotel room in Portland. He was 62. Though a formal autopsy report has yet to be issued, Reuters states that a coroner's spokesman said it appeared Mitchell died of natural causes. Mitchell was in Portland having completed the 18-date Experience Hendrix concert tour. Jimi Hendrix died in 1970, while the Experience bassist, Noel Redding died in 2003. The Jimi Hendrix Experience performed their last tour in 1969. John ‘Mitch’ Mitchell was born in Ealing in West London, the home of the legendary blues club that spawned the careers of John Mayall, Brian Jones, and many more musicians in the 1960s.
One of the UK’s, if not the world’s, best new soul voices, James Morrison, just posted a new video for “Nothing Ever Hurt Like You” on IMEEM. “Nothing Ever Hurt Like You” is classic Muscle Shoals-style soul, fed by horns, Hammond organ, and good old heartache. Morrison – a clean-cut antithesis to Brit soul queen Amy Winehouse and a delight in concert – released his sophomore offering, ‘Songs for You, Truths For Me’ (Interscope/Polydor), in September.
Before “Twilight” even hits the big screen on Nov. 21, the Vampire flick is already making money. The rock anthem filled soundtrack – and it’s a goodie: a cherry picked modern rock selection that includes two new songs from Paramore – debuted at #1 on this week’s SoundScan/Billboard 200 album chart, toppling gnarly old Australian rockers AC/DC. The compilation hit #1 spot on SoundScan’s Digital Albums chart too. The video for leadoff track, Paramore’s “Decode,” premiered last week on MTV and on “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s web site. (Meyer’s career has taken quite the rock ‘n’ roll twist: The Arizona-based writer is set to direct the new video for Jack's Mannequin track, "The Resolution.") Coen Brothers favorite, Carter Burwell’s incidental score for “Twilight” is released Nov. 25.
Side note: On Nov. 18, Paramore performs and sign autographs at the Hollywood & Highland Hot Topic store in Los Angeles. Hit the store's web site for more information.
