First-year Aggie football coach DeWayne Walker was hired to come in and clean up the mess that Hal Mumme left by reaching out to the city of Las Cruces and its residents. In an attempt to gain a solid fan base for the upcoming season, Walker, in association with some local businesses, invites fans of all ages to the first-ever Aggie Football Summer Spectacular and BBQ Picnic.
The event will be held on Friday, June 26 at Brigid's Cross Irish Pub, located at 1338 Picacho Hills Drive in Las Cruces. The cost is $20 a ticket, which includes a BBQ dinner and one-drink ticket to be used at Brigid's Cross Irish Pub. All proceeds will benefit the Aggie football program for the upcoming season.
People who attend will get to meet and mingle with Walker and his first-year staff. During Mumme's disastrous tenure as NMSU football coach events like this were non-existent, and the Aggie fan base slowly began to dwindle. Last season, the Aggies were ranked toward the bottom of the Western Athletic Conference in attendance for home games.
Walker brings in a breath of fresh air to a program that has had only five winning seasons since the late 1960s. Fans should try to rinse away the foul tastes in their mouths left by Mumme and attend the BBQ, mostly because Walker is making an effort to turn this program around.
It is going to take a lot more than summer BBQ's and meet-and-greets to make the Aggies a better football team, but Walker is starting in the right direction.
