IAEA: Iran is not developing nuclear weapons

Iran has continued to profess they are not developing weapons and just days ago, the incoming head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says he knows of no hard evidence that Iran is trying to gain the ability to develop nuclear weapons. In addition, one of our own government reports say Iran isn’t building nuclear weapons. Take a few minutes to examine the report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the unedited video of how Iranian President Ahmadinejad proposes Israel deals with the Palestinians. 

US Report:  Iran has no nuclear weapons
20 Months ago a United States government agency, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, published a report entitled, Iran: Nuclear Intentions and Capabilities, which states the earliest Iran would be able to develop enough plutonium for a nuclear weapon is 2015.  The entire report can be seen here here.  Here are the highlights of this report.

We assess with moderate confidence Tehran had not restarted its nuclear weapons program as of mid-2007, but we do not know whether it currently intends to develop nuclear weapons.

We continue to assess with moderate-to-high confidence that Iran does not currently
have a nuclear weapon.

We judge with moderate confidence that the earliest possible date Iran would be technically capable of producing enough HEU for a weapon is late 2009, but this is very unlikely.

We judge with moderate confidence Iran probably would be technically capable of producing enough HEU for a weapon sometime during the 2010-2015 time frame. (INR judges Iran is unlikely to achieve this capability before 2013 because of foreseeable technical and programmatic problems.) All agencies recognize the possibility that this capability may not be attained until after 2015.

In closing I want to make one thing very clear.  I do not like nor support Iranian President Ahmadinejad. However, his people have a right to create their own power and become self sufficient. From all indications, that is truly all Iran wants to do. 

India and Iran both supported Afghanistan’s minority-dominated “Northern Alliance” against the Taliban during 1996-2001 (in contrast to Pakistan, which supported the Taliban).

Both countries supported the U.S. military-led ousting of the Taliban regime and both seek to prevent a return of a Taliban or Taliban-style regime.

India and Iran have each separately given substantial economic aid to the U.S.-backed government of Hamid Karzai.

Iran is assisting Afghanistan’s economic reconstruction through road building and other construction in the areas bordering Afghanistan.
