Woman At The Well by Mary Moss
Woman At The Well: Thirsting for Grace by Mary Moss

For Richmond author Mary Moss, it’s all about grace. That’s why she separated her devotional book, Woman At The Well, into three sections that revolve around it: Searching for God’s Saving Grace, Discovering God’s Amazing Grace and Relying upon God’s Sufficient Grace. Her inspirational book includes prose, poetry and scripture passages that show how God’s grace works in the lives of everyone.

Recently, Mary Moss answered some questions about her book and shared her thoughts about grace and redemption. Here is the first part of the interview:

Richmond Books Examiner: What inspired you to write Woman At The Well?
Mary Moss: It’s a long, convoluted story but the bottom line is that it came to obedience. I knew about 2 years before I self-published the book, that I was supposed to do so. I just kept fighting it. Fortunately, God kept placing people in my path who wouldn’t let it go and continued to encourage-and even sometimes-shove me kicking and screaming-until I finally just “did it!”

RBE: What is the significance of the title for you? What would you like others to take from the title?
Moss: There are several significant factors about the title. First of all, I want to minister to women-of all ages and stages. The story of this Biblical woman is one of redemption and grace and I want all women to know they have this same grace available to them as well. No matter what we may have done, what life we may have lived or anything we wish we had never done or how we are currently living—Jesus offers us the Living Water. He bids us to drink deeply and be saved.

RBE: Your book contains prose devotions, poetry and scripture passages. It is also divided into three sections about grace. Do you have a favorite passage or section? Is there a part that represents the entire book?
Moss: This is a challenging question because as I reviewed each page to select a “favorite” to share, I found it impossible to pick only one. This book was a labor of love and represents many facets of my faith journey so each and every word within the pages is significant and important to me.
Grace is the common thread throughout the book and that is what I hope readers grasp and embrace-that it is God’s grace that saves us from ourselves and delivers us into the loving arms of our Savior. His grace doesn’t change, but I think our understanding of that grace does. I have found that the more I accept the gift of freely-offered grace the more that grace is manifested in my life.

RBE: Would you like to share an excerpt?
Moss: I wrote this poem for a friend who was struggling with a recent job loss and other life changes in January 2006. The words though, I think offer comfort to anyone in these challenging times-and any time!

Do Not Be Discouraged
Do not be discouraged.
Do not feel afraid.
You are the most precious
of all that God has made.
Do not be downhearted.
Do not feel alone.
You are God’s beloved
And his heart is your true home.
Do not be unsettled.
Do not feel adrift
You are from the Spirit breathed
And your life is a precious gift.
Do not be sad or angry.
Do not feel betrayed.
You are the Son’s brother
In this great plan God has made.
Do not long for answers.
Do not feel confused.
You are the most prophetic
of all the voices God has used.
Do not search for comfort.
Do not feel unsure.
You were made with purpose.
And for this world you could be the cure.
Do not be discouraged.
Do not ask God why.
You are his beloved
And he waits for you in the sky.
