If a trade was going to take place with a New York Knicks guard involved most thought it would include disgruntled point guard Stephon Marbury.
Friday the Knicks decided to move another "score first" point guard, agreeing in principle to send Jamal Crawford to Golden State for Al Harrington.
Crawford was averaging 19.6 points per game this season for the Knicks, after averaging a career-high 20.6 a season ago. The deal may prove to be less about Crawford's performance in NYC and more about erasing salaries off of the Knicks' books in an effort to attract LeBron James in the summer of 2010.
This is just the lastest move included in the new direction that the Knicks are headed in under first-year head coach Mike D'Antoni and team president Donnie Walsh.
Walsh, then with Indiana, drafted Harrington in 1998, and Walsh later traded to bring Harrington back to the Pacers from Atlanta in 2006.
Now Harrington, 28, reunites with Walsh after demanding a trade from Golden State after the first week of the season. Harrington is averaging just 12.4 points and 5.6 rebounds in five games this season, after missing the last six games with a back injury.
This appears to be just the first of multiple deals to take place involving the Knicks, as they begin to part ways with players from the Isiah Thomas era, when the team was a mainstay at the bottom of the standings.
