Picture it: 1998. For those who remembered the first time you heard the once-underground rap group "Black Star" (made up of Talib Kweli, Mos Def and DJ Hi-Tek) make it's way onto the airwaves, you couldn't help but nod your head to the infectious beats and mouth the rhymes that they spit. Some immediately went to buy the CD; others might have taped it off the radio (you know who you are!) With their widely-praised self-titled debut album "Black Star", the three wise men of the underground hip-hop scene had made their mark in the golden age of rap in the 1990's.
Loyal fans of Black Star soon turned their attention to Mos Def's first solo album "Black on Both Sides" in 1999, (Kweli and DJ Hi- Tek had collaborated on "Reflection Eternal" in 2000.) which had solidified his place in the new millennium of hip-hop with such songs as "Umi Says", "Mathematics" and "Ms. Fat Booty". Many music critics revered the success of the album and was labeled a classic by underground rap fans all over the world.
Although Mos made other albums like "The New Danger" and "True Magic", his latest album "The Ecstatic" brings listeners back to the spell he brought them under from "Black on Both Sides" - eclectic hooks and catchy beats, but paired with relevant and food for thought messages. Each song gives you something completely different from the last. This is an album for not just one, but for everyone- whether you love rocking out or to be laid-back and cool, Mos never fails to deliver his signature one of a kind style to your speakers or your eardrums.
