Back to school deals are better than ever this year.

If you're like many Wichita families, you'll be spending less this year for back to school clothing, shoes and school supplies.

The National Retail Federation projects that back to school spending will decrease by 7.7% this year vs. 2008's results.  What that means is retailers will be competing fiercely for your back to school dollars.

If you haven't already noticed, the price cutting is in full swing.

How about Miley Cyrus and Max Azria's new fashion line at Wal-Mart, with prices starting at just $7.

There's also 24 packs of Crayola crayons for just a quarter, while supplies last.

Over at Target, $9 buys a basic backpack, a Texas Instruments calculator or a 4 GB USB Drive.

Industry experts indicate that drugstores will be a hot spot for back to school bargains and locally, there are plenty of deals to be found at Walgreens.

At Walgreens, 1 subject notebooks are just 49 cents, with coupon, while a variety of notebooks, binders, and other suppliers are Buy 1, Get 1 FREE!

With many schools heading back to class next week, the time is right to cash in on these great back to school sales.  Here are a few simple tips to getting the best deals.

  1. Check out the weekly circulars by purchasing The Wichita Eagle or going online, where you can find all the deals listed above.
  2. Find and use those valuable coupons.  Either clip them from the weekly ads or hold on to ones that come in the mail.  Walgreens and Target, as well as other retailers, regularly send out coupon books to customers on their mailing lists.
  3. There are great bargains to be had in other departments as well.  If you're looking for home stuff, electronics or HBA, you'll find some outstanding prices on good quality products.

All the prices quoted in this article come from a search of weekly circulars for zip code 67207, completed on August 10, 2009.  Prices and availability of products may be different at the time you are reading this article.
