NEW JERSEY  The gubernatorial election in New Jersey turned ugly months ago. Incumbent John Corzine (D) and challenger Chris Christie (R) have been slinging mud for months--and some of their comments have been ad hoc, focusing on each others' appearances and personal lives.

Independent challenger Chris Daggett has largely abstained from giving or receiving personal attacks.

In an opinion piece on IrishCentral.com, publisher Niall O'Dowd boasts multiple examples of rotund Irish and Irish American politicians (including the late Ted Kennedy). In this lighthearted article, O'Dowd encourages voters to think about the real issues at hand.

That said, the United States and its Irish American politicians are not alone in the obesity epidemic. IrishHealth.com recently reported that this is a growing trend in Ireland as well.
