I’ve come across many other native Philadelphians who also have first names of Irish origin. Some are of course more common in America to others—a few are not as commonly used in American due to the differences in pronunciation between the Irish language and American English.

Here are a few names of Irish origin held by some of my favorite Philadelphians:

Patrick – Ireland’s patron saint, this name actually has Latin origins. Philly local Patrick Murphy serves in the House of Representatives.

Clare—A favorite place name of mine, this is the name of an Irish county as well as the region’s best writing tutor.

Ryan—Meaning “little king,” 2006 baseball MVP Ryan Howard traces his roots to Philadelphia.

Kelly—This name means “bright-headed.” Even though my friend/co-worker/fellow writer is certainly not blonde (or perhaps because she isn’t), she’s still my favorite Floridian-turned-Philadelphian.

Tara—My first name refers to the central point in Ireland where Irish kings were crowned and are buried. Having kissed the Blarney Stone, I am also blessed with the gift of gab.
