When it comes to social networking it is hard to know what to expect next. People tweet on Twitter when they are in labor, post on Facebook about their new baby and give birth live on a social networking site for Moms.
Yes, you read that correctly. There's going to be a live birth broadcast on a social networking site for Moms at some point in November and you can watch. If you want to. The Internet has come a long, long way since the days of chat rooms on Prodigy.com or community bulletin boards on AOL.com using a dial-up connection.
A 23-year-old first time mother will give birth live on MomsLikeMe.com, a social networking site run by Gannett Digital Media Network. MomsLikeMe.com runs locally based Web sites in 80 cities, where members share information on pregnancies and motherhood. The woman who has agreed to share her delivery room with a camera is a member of the network’s TwinCities.MomsLikeMe.com community.
The young woman's pregnancy has been documented through discussion boards and live chats in a group called “Watch Lynsee Grow". According to a survey done on MomsLikeMe.com, about 60% of members would be interested in watching the live birth.
The public viewing a live birth is nothing new. There are shows on cable that chronicle pregnancies and show the birthing process. Back in 2001, ABC's Good Morning America showed viewers a live birth and did it again in 2002. The site pregnancy.healthguru.com has childbirth videos, not necessarily live but very graphic for the squeamish set.
While watching a live birth on line might not be something novel, MomsLikeMe.com is connecting with others who want to share their pregnancy and childbirth experiences in a social network setting. Especially for first time mothers, this is a great use of social network because it forms a wonderful support group for mothers and perhaps takes the first time fears out of child birth. Having the choice to participate in watching the childbirth is exactly what social networking is all about. Participating on your terms.
If you're interested in viewing the live childbirth or just want to connect with the mom who is chronicling her pregnancy and birth on a social network, become a part of the MomsLikeMe community. You can find the group following Lynsee's birth here: Watch Lynsee Grow.
