We all know that volunteering is good for the community and those in need. But volunteering is good for you too. Those who volunteer regularly often find purpose, hope, and develop broader social connections. And research shows they tend to be a happier lot. Happier people are healthier and more balanced.  Volunteering takes the mind off oneself and daily problems and gives us appreciation for what we have.  With so many organizations relying on volunteers for survival, it is also a contribution of deep significance, both to those in need and to our communities.   If you already volunteer, you can likely relate.
As a single person, you have a chance to meet others who are civic minded. What better network of friends to have – those who care! Think about your passion. Is it the poor, animals, the elderly, kids, the lonely, perhaps prison ministry?   I suggest praying about it and asking God to show you where you’d fit and be most effective, and where He would like you to be.  There are so many avenues for volunteer work.
Here are a few ideas to consider when looking
  • Check the internet. I’ve seen opportunities on Craig’s List and Metro Volunteers in the Denver area.
  • Fundraise.  Become a leader at work by organizing a fundraiser. You can also do this in your community by having a garage sale, bake sale, etc. Raise funds or hold a canned food drive for a local food bank.
  • Look on your church website or bulletin, or contact the singles pastor or facilitator for group activities. Mobilize your singles group for a food drive or volunteer opportunity.
  • Consider serving on a board of directors – ask if your favorite charity is adding to its board, check its website or look on the internet (see the first bullet point above).
  • Contact your favorite charity and ask them what they need and how you can make a difference.
  • Get a group together to rake leaves for an elderly widow or couple in your neighborhood, or contact a senior connection organization for those in need.
  • Do you have a talent? Can you sing or are you musically gifted? Maybe you’re handy or can build or maintain a website. There are nursing homes, shelters and other facilities where those talents are welcome. It’s a way to directly touch the lives of others in a positive way. How can you not help but feel good about yourself?
  • Tutor in your area of expertise.
You’ll find that once you begin, it really isn’t a burden on your time.  Instead, it’s fulfilling. I sit on a very hands-on board of directors. The activities I’ve done include fundraising, helping to coordinate events, getting the word out about the cause, press releases, and more. I’ve developed leadership skills, teamwork skills, and deeper empathy for the plight of the poor.  The experience has been invaluable; the people I’ve met have been a blessing to me. And most importantly, I feel the mission of the agency is invaluable. I love the people we help!  The small agency serves low income and homeless seniors by providing meals, a safe shelter, outreach, case management, and more.   You never know how your example and your work will affect someone or serve as an inspiration to others.
