What would be the best names for US twins born on the fourth of July? Ben and Franklin? George and Martha? Liberty and Justice? Strangely (or probably not so strangely), patriotic name pairings, such as these, weren’t the choices made by the parents of some famous sets of twins who were born on July 4. Who are these famous multiples?

Ann Landers and               Abigail Van Buren
Twins Ann Landers and Abigail Van Buren were born on the fourth of July,1918, and grew up in Sioux City, IA. This July 4 duo became household names for decades. Both wrote newspaper advice columns; one named “Ask Ann Landers” and the other tagged as “Dear Abby.” Ann died in 2002, but the “Dear Abby” column, now written by Abigail’s daughter, Jeanne Phillips, continues to be carried by the Wichita Eagle.

Horace and Harvey Grant
Horace and Harvey Grant were born on the fourth of July, 1965 in Augusta, GA. Basketball became their road to fame. Horace competed in the NBA for 17 years playing alongside such basketball greats as Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Harvey’s NBA career began with the NBA draft of 1988 in which he was chosen twelfth overall and ran from 1988-1999.

Marie and Martha Voth
Although not household names, Kansans Marie and Martha Voth put their mark on US memories by using Turkey Red wheat to weave an exact replica of the Liberty Bell. The project was commissioned by the Smithsonian Institution as a part of America’s bicentennial celebration.

Just for fun
One story from a humorist offers a unique idea for commemorating a famous quote from the American Revolution through the naming of twins born on the fourth of July.

Hope you have a double, triple, or more burst of family fun this July 4!
