Summer in Kansas usually means heading for the nearest swimming pool. If swimming with infants or toddlers, whether singles or multiples, is on the schedule for July 4, be aware of the recall of inflatable baby floats just announced by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, in conjunction with Aqua-Leisure.
Aqua-Leisure, located in Avon, MA, makes a wide variety of swim gear. The baby floats involved in the product recall include 14 different styles, such as Deluxe Baby Boat, Quacker Float, and Squirtin’ Tootin’ Tugboat.
In fact, according to the information noted on the Aqua-Leisure website, the recall involves about four million units which were sold throughout the US from December 2002 through June 2009. Stores including Target, Toys “R” Us, Walmart, Dollar General, Kmart, and Walgreens stocked the product.
If you purchased an Aqua-Leisure inflatable baby float during that time span, check the valve of the unit. A date between 08/02 and 07/08 is molded onto the valves of the defective units. (If the letters “NP” are molded onto the valve, the product is not involved in the recall.)
Why are these products being recalled? The leg straps have been identified as hazardous, according to Aqua-Leisure.
“The leg straps in the seat of the float can tear, causing children to fall into or under the water, posing a risk of drowning,” states the Aqua-Leisure website.
To date, no injuries have been recorded due to this hazard; however, tears in 31 seats have been reported resulting in children dropping into the water.
A complete list of recalled floats, along with photos and model numbers, is posted on the Aqua-Leisure website.
