Boston's Mayor Menino came to the West End to meet with residents on Wednesday May 13th. The Mayor, who is running for his fifth term met with residents at the West End Community Center , in an open house format. The mayor, very bravely, took unscripted questions from West End residents living in the "square" between Staniford and Storrow Drive, The Garden and Cambridge Street. We were glad to have him. There was a sense of empowerment in the room. We "regular" people were able to speak directly to "Hizzonah" and have our voices heard.
Although there were very few direct questions about his re-election bid, everyone in the room felt like this was an important meeting with potential voters. The questions covered several topics including: safety on the subway, after the recent crash involving a driver who was texting, the proposal to move City Hall to Southie, and the proliferation of geese on the Esplanade in the Spring. But most of the questions had to do with Boston construction projects which were planned, proposed and/or stalled due to funding issues.
A representative from the Boston Redevelopment Authority attended the meeting with the mayor, so that he could field questions on the upcoming construction projects in the area. Both he and Mayor assured the community repeatedly that they would have an opportunity to provide meaningful input during the early stages of urban planning.
The forum was informative in many ways. However, most of the new information I learned actually came from my neighbors. This was an unscripted forum, the questions were not provided in advance. However, the mayor should have been able (willing) to answer questions about State projects that occurred within the City of Boston. Because Boston is the capital city of Massachusetts, we have a great deal of state involvement with the city, and vice versa. I hope that whoever becomes the next mayor of Boston will be able to work that unique relationship with the state to our advantage.
Get inspired and get to know your mayor!
