In an effort to balance the state budget Governor Patrick wants to eliminate the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority. However, before it's dismantled, it will have to raise money to pay off the Big Dig debt. To that effort the Turnpike Authority hopes to raise tolls inside 128 and eliminate tolls in central and western Massachusetts, with the exception of the Connecticut and New York borders.
After the Turnpike Authority is dismantled two existing government agencies would take over maintenance of the roads. Central and western Massachusetts will be covered by the Mass Highway Department. Roads inside 128 would be covered by the Massport.
Toll increases are like tax increases. No one wants to discuss them, but sometimes they are necessary. We have been playing "hot potato" with the Big Dig debt for over a decade. However, the buck has now stopped with us and Governor Patrick almost twenty years later. Many of the roads, overpasses and bridges outside of 128 have suffered. All the state and federal highway money has been funneled into a never-ending highway project that was so poorly built, it fell on Milena Del Valle, ending her life.
Massachusetts is in an economic crisis. I hope this and other initiatives can help us move forward in this tight economy.
