What a wonderful world it could be.

According the the recently released U.N. 2009 World Drug Report, marijuana is much more harmful than commonly believed.

The report suggests that today's strains of marijuana- believed to be up to ten times stronger than strains available in the 1970's- can do real and lasting damage to the human brain. Depression, anxiety and mild psychosis are touted as the most prevalent side-effects.

In addition, teen users of marijuana are at a heightened risk of becoming bipolar or developing schizophrenia. The report also went into some detail regarding a possible link between regular marijuana use and Alzheimer's Disease.

Of course, none of this rhetoric is new... detractors have been quoting these same tired, old 'facts' for decades now. However, the report provide some interesting statistics.

Apparently, there's been a truly tremendous increase in the use and cultivation of marijuana in North America over the past decade. According to the U.N.'s report, over 2/3 of all pot seizures by law enforcement agencies worldwide take place in the United States and in Mexico.

The production and distribution of opium and cocaine on a global scale has declined dramatically... but marijuana seizures in North America just keep on risin'. The report claims that over 3.5 million kilograms of marijuana were seized by North American authorities in 2007 alone- 2.2 in Mexico and about 1.5 in the U.S.

Now THAT is a helluva lot of weed... what a waste.

Seems to me that the money spent pursuing pot-related crime in North America could be put to much better use. Our national infrastructure is crumbling right before our eyes, and we still spend billions chasing after lank-haired hippies anddirt-poor Mexican drug mules.

When it comes to the legalization of marijuana, the War on Drugs ain't over yet- not by a long shot.
