High School Musical star Zac Efron, 21, is looking to expand his Hollywood horizons. Trading in his Wildcats uniform from the High School Musical franchise that brought him to major fame, Efron has just signed on to star in a new thriller by Mandate Pictures. While the plot is being kept hush-hush, the script is being penned by Leslie Dixon (Mrs. Doubtfire) and is being credited as a “sexy thriller”. Dixon first worked with Efron in 2007 when she scripted the film adaptation of Hairspray.
Efron’s rush to fame began in 2006 with the debut of High School Musical on the Disney Channel. It wasn’t until 2008 that Disney took the Wildcats to the big screen; High School Musical 3: Senior Year earned Disney $90 million domestically. Zac’s first lead role in a major grossing film came this past May with 17 Again. The film raked in $63 million in the US alone.
But Zac is continuing to evolve into leading man-material; Efron will step up as an executive producer on untitled thriller, serving along with Mandate’s Nathan Kahane.
