Breaking the heart of our nation’s capital on a 4th of July weekend was not very patriotic, but it is exactly what Marta did with a goal in the 91st minute versus the Washington Freedom Sunday afternoon. The goal was enough to earn the Sol their 11th win of the season and with a victory against St. Louis Athletica on Wednesday, they will guarantee a spot in the WPS championship game.
However, if Los Angeles makes it to the championship game, they will be without their second leading scorer, Camille Abily. The European Championships start the day after the final, FIFA rules say players have to be released to their national teams 14 days before the start of the tournament. Abily will be representing France and she will be unable to join the Sol for the inaugural playoffs of the WPS.
Hopefully the Sol will have another player in their roster, that will step up in Abily’s place.
The Sol's final regular season home match this Wednesday, July 8 will kick-off at 12 pm at The Home Depot Center on the Campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills. Visit www.losangelessol.com for more info.
