Keeping Missouri kids safe from Internet predators
By Melina Ann Collison
St. Louis – Missouri is keeping our children safe and doing a good job at it. The names of 373 Missouri residents who were removed from the MySpace website for having profiles that matched registered sex offenders were given to the Missouri Highway Patrol.
The attorney general’s office asked the Missouri Highway Patrol to see if any of these sex offenders are using the Internet to contact minors. This is a direct violation of the sex offender’s parole.
Visiting social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter to talk to children or contact minors is a prohibited action for sexual offenders. To make sure our children are safe these people are usually removed from social networking sites.
Missouri has been getting a list of names from people who were removed from social networking sites because they are potential offenders or match the profile of sex offenders for over a year now. This is not the first set of names given to the Missouri Highway Patrol. As a matter of fact over 1,800 names have passed hands this past 12 months.
Attorney General Chris Koster is dedicated to keeping Missouri safe in everyway that he can. New times are upon us and with the Internet sexual predators are more able to contact children without ever leaving their homes. Koster is using every means possible to make sure this does not happen. In the few short months Koster has been with Missouri he has made a big impact.
