Samwise Didier is a artist at Blizzard, who got the nickname Panda, for being big and hairy, but also gentle. He has since had a love for panda bears. One April Fool’s Day, as Blizzard likes to entice the public with leaking joke information, it was announced there would be a new race in Warcraft III, the Pandaren. The word Pandaren comes from the word Panda and the Chinese word Ren, which means Person. These Panda-persons were just an invention by Samwise, meant to be a joke.
The response was wild. With so much excitement over them, they were featured in Warcraft III. Lore was written about them, they had their own secret island where they come from, and they aided Rexxar of the Hoard. People have been clamoring for the race to be a part of Warcraft. Each expansion comes with rumors that they will be a playable race, and before the release of The Burning Crusade, one magazine reported they saw concept art for the race.
As yet, Pandaren have not appeared in World of Warcraft. There is an item in the Barrens called Chen’s Empty Keg, a reference to Pandaren brewmaster Chen Stormstout. A kid in Stormwind is seen to say “It’s true! People have seen them. Pandaren really do exist!”
Now a new rumor is going around that there will be a bound-on-account non-combat companion pet, Pandaren Monk, available with patch 3.2.2. This is backed up by video footage (below). No word yet on where it drops.
A large part of Padaren society is beer, brewmasters being a highly respected class in their culture. Brewfest begins Sunday, September 20. Could they be a purchasable pet? Or a drop from Coren Direbrew? If they are to be released in the patch, it is unlikely they will be out prior to Brewfest. This is a pet worth watching for, whether you are an avid collector of companions, into the secret lore of Azeroth, or just think the little panda is adorable.
