Keep black cats and all pets indoors and safe!
Keep black cats and all pets indoors and safe!
Nicole Perri Amicone

The Halloween holiday season is one of the worst times for pets! The strangers, the doorbells, the costumes - oh my! It is a dangerous couple of weeks coming up, not only because of the unusual amount of foot traffic to your door and in the neighborhood. The trick-or-treaters with costumes and screams, ringing doorbells and banging on doors is super stressful for pets, but the threat of stupid people could be just as dangerous if not more so.

Whether it is kids playing tricks or people who mean to cause pets harm on purpose because they have an evil streak, both call for keeping pets indoors, with collar and tags just in case. Black cats are especially vulnerable with all of the extra attention because of the association with Halloween, so kitty would be safest inside, even if usually allowed out.

Animals easily stress with repetitive noise and the sight of strangers. Certain candies can kill your pet in quantities or at the least cause very bad diarrhea. RAISINS CAN KILL YOUR PET due to an enzyme which raises levels in the liver/kidneys that can send your pet into renal or kidney failure with as little as 4 raisins. Keep them in, monitored and safe. Take the following tips into consideration this Halloween season and have a safe and happy holiday!

Some tips to keep in mind are as follows:

  1. Keep pets indoors except when playing or pottying on leash or in a closed and monitored yard.
  2. Keep pets tagged and collared at all times.
  3. Never leave doors open or ajar. Monitor children going in or out.
  4. Do not let unsupervised children walk pets on or off leash.
  5. Do not leave pets outdoors for any length of time unsupervised.
  6. Keep pets in a separate safe room with a person during trick-or-treat hours.
  7. Keep candy and trinkets out of reach of your pet.
  8. Sit outside to dish out the treats to the kids so there is no knocking or ringing the doorbell.
  9. Do not keep pets outside while trick-or-treaters are walking house to house.
  10. Keep pets away from windows or doors with vision to the doorstep during trick-or-treat hours.

                                                        Happiest Halloween to all!
