Contact Music has reported that Shakira is getting involved in the ongoing U.K debate over illegal downloading. The singer insists that this [illegal downloading] brings her "closer to her fans". Lily Allen, however, doesn't feel the same way. She headed a campaign last month to stop the illegal file-sharing and went as far as to call upon the British government to help beat those who download illegally. Allen fears that illegal downloading will destroy the music industry.
The singer is sympathetic to the downloaders and told Sky News, "I like what's going on because I feel closer to the fans and the people who appreciate the music. It's the democratisation of music in a way, and music is a gift. That's what it should be, a gift."
Allen feels strong that those starting out in the music industry will struggle because of this. Singer Nelly Furtado is joining in on the debating, stating that sales loss isn't relevant to success. She says, "If you love music you're going to make it anyway. You'll find an audience, and you may not make like millions of dollars but you'll make enough to have a house and a family and a car."
