Want to serve a different type of spirit at this year’s holiday party? The caipirinha, Brazil’s national drink, is a lime-infused beverage with a lot of taste and a potent punch. Try the recipe below to spread some holiday cheer and get your party goers asking,
“how did you make this?”
Ingredients:
-1 lime
-1 tablespoon sugar
-1/2 cup cachaca*
-Ice

Directions:
1. Quarter the lime, then cut the pieces crosswise.
2. Put lime and sugar in a glass and mash (get that stress out!).
3. Add ice.
4. Pour cachaca* into glass and shake well.
5. For a festive touch, add a strawberry and or lime wedge to the rim of the glass.
*Cachaca is a Brazilian liquor that, unlike rum, is made using sugar cane juice. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find. See if your local liquor store will special order it for you. If not, you can find it online. Check out Shoppers Vineyard, where you can get a bottle for as low as $18.99. If all else fails, you can substitute cachaca for vodka (caipirosca) or rum (caipirissima). You also can sample a number of different flavored caipirinhas at Cuba Libre.
