MIT report discusses the imperative of reducing emissions from existing coal-fired power plants

Once built, coal plants are one of the cheapest sources of power. It is expected that existing coal plants will continue to operate for decades. Currently, almost half of all electricity in the U.S. is supplied by coal. Capacity in China is about equal to the U.S. Together, the U.S. and China account for about 40% of global CO2 emissions produced by humans, and for over half of global coal use.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology released a report today concluding that the world cannot achieve significant reductions in CO2 emissions, without commitments to reduce emissions from existing coal-fired power plants in both the United States and China. Bilateral approaches on climate change should be encouraged and supported as a matter of U.S. policy.
