employee perceptions, internal survey, sustainabilityThe American Marketing Association and Fleishman?Hillard recently collaborated on a survey to gauge employee's perceptions about sustainability and the potential for future organizational investments in sustainability or adoption of sustainable business practices.

Overall, when it came to environmental sustainability, employees surveyed felt that their organizations still had a long way to go.  The study found that even the most popular sustainability programs — recycling and electric energy efficiency  — are extensively embraced by only a minority of businesses.

Further, only a fifth of respondents (22%) felt that their organizations have put considerable efforts and resources behind sustainability issues in recent years.  A majority felt that only some efforts (41%) or token efforts (22%) were made in recent years to address sustainability issues.

A total of 270 respondents completed the survey.  One fifth of the respondents come from marketing or communications businesses; the remainder represent a strong cross section of other economic sectors; 28% of the respondents come from companies with 1,000 or more employees, 41% come from companies with 20 to 999 employees, and 31% of the respondents come from companies with fewer than 20 employees.
