A business strategy that incorporates green measures can:

  1. Reduce costs by making more efficient use of energy and natural resources.
  2. Increase access to capital through socially responsible investors.
  3. Improve recruitment efforts by attracting employees that share sustainability concerns.
  4. Increase market share by differentiating products and services.
  5. Be a catalyst for the creation of new business opportunities.

So who should initiate these measures?

In small organizations, top management may be in the best position to initiate sustainability measures. Within larger organizations, a total quality management team may be best suited to undertake sustainability initiatives.

Where do you start?

Starting with a small step, such as recycling paper - for which the impact is easy to measure - is always a good bet. This can provide your organization with some early successes.
