108 Sun Salutations
Even for most well conditioned practitioners, that’s A LOT of Sun Salutations. The Sun Salutation, Surya Namaskar in Sanskrit, is a series of individual asanas/poses performed in sequence. There are many different types of Sun Salutations. The ones that I’ve seen or read about are composed of seven and up to 12 poses. That’s A LOT of poses. And the sequences are practiced once for each side of the body, so to accomplish this lot of Surya Namaskar will require not just 108, but 216
tadasana/mountain poses, forward folds, flat backs, forward lunges, planks, up dogs, down dogs, back into a lunge, forward folds, back to tadasana/mountain pose.
That’s a lot calories and serious prana/breath work. Yoga is not exercise, but this is pretty close. As you can tell, me, I’m not a huge fan of this yoga fanfare, particularly for beginners, as it inhibits the mindful nature of yoga, but it’s a feature of these events which are often put on to raise money for charity, and there’s a few of them going on in these parts this weekend. It's a chance to meet some yoga folks you wouldn't ordinarily commingle with, too. Check ‘em out if you’ve a mind…
