September brings cooler weather in the Utah garden. While it may seem like gardening chores are winding down, there is still plenty that you can do in the garden this month!
Start planning for spring. Now is a great time to choose bulbs that bloom in the spring and get them at a discounted rate. Buy now for later planting, and enjoy bulk prices. Great places to get spring bulbs are local nurseries, Costco, and online.
Plant your cold weather crops. Garlic bulbs, spinach, cauliflower, lettuces, kale, and endive. Onions planted in the fall also do very well for spring harvesting.
Plant late blooming flowers, perennials, trees and shrubs.
Pull tender summer bulbs. Store your summer bulbs for next year in a peat moss filled box (or boxes) in a cold place that doesn't freeze. An inclosed garage is a great option.
Prepare plants that you will bring indoors. Use a hose, and even Bug Blaster (thebugblaster.com) to get off pests. Clean off pots and other containers.
Harvest. Some crops are going to be ready to harvest. Check in on all your veggies, and make sure to take care when you pick fruit. Fruit trees start making new growth now for spring, so take care not to break off the new growth when you harvest.
